There is a flood of photographers offering mini sessions. These mini sessions typically cost half of what a regular hour session would be. The pricing is tempting, and some families believe their children cannot handle a full hour of photos.
I get inquiries from families asking about mini sessions every now and then. I don’t offer mini sessions. Here is why.
Mini session is too short!
These short sessions are usually 15, 20, or 30 minutes long. So for families thinking their children will lose interest, or won’t be able to wrangled them for the duration, this may seem like a good solution to get some family photos. Instead, families are stressed and pressed for time. They only get a few photos, and the clock is ticking. It ends up being a race for time, and it can go south pretty quickly. Some children, even adults, need time to warm up, especially to new and unfamiliar faces. Yes, mini sessions are a great way to get a few images, and they are perfect for families that have cooperative kids who are not camera shy. If you want a more relaxed family session, a full hour with a photographer that you trust would be a more ideal choice.
Limited images
Most mini sessions offer only a few digital images. Due the to nature of a short session, it’s hard to get a variety of images. I love to tell a story through a session, so I always try to get a variety of fun moments, tender kisses, and warm snuggles. With a full hour, it gives me and the families more time to become comfortable with each other. Once families relax, I can often capture intimate moments that would really showcase the family’s beautiful connection.
Keeping it fun
Family photo sessions should be fun and stress free. If you are having fun, it will show in the images. I want families to have a wonderful experience, and be themselves in front of the camera. Having a full hour session can give us the opportunity to run around, play games, sing songs, or explore the scenery. Some of the best images are the seemingly mundane moments of children walking, or staring off into the ocean.
