Have you ever booked a winter family photo session? Fall is one of the busiest season for family photos, but winter is usually very a slow season for Vancouver based family photographers. Let me give you a few ideas how to dress without a large parka coat!
Our winters can be mild, but when it’s cold no one wants to be outside for an hour! I always suggest wearing a warm base layer or thermal underwear! These are perfect to wear under pants and dresses, since it doesn’t add bulk.
Sweaters are perfect because it adds texture and warmth to your photos. When deciding on your sweaters, be mindful of the material. Cotton and synthetic fibres are not as warm as wool or cashmere. Knitted vests are also a good idea for kids.
My favourite accessory is a big blanket scarf! This can be wrapped around mom and the kids. The cozy snuggles make for some sweet picture moments. A scarf with neutral colour and simple pattern is the best choice. Kids can rock knitted toques and warm mittens!
If you already have some boots at home, it is the perfect occasion to bring them out! If your feet are warm, your body will likely feel warmer too. Winter sessions often mean wet or slippery grounds, so we are always thinking safety first with appropriate footwear!
It is totally possible to wear a dress in winter! Thicker materials like corduroy, wool blend, fleece, are perfect for cooler seasons. Keep in mind that longer dresses give you the option to wear thicker thermal base layers underneath. If you’ve got a beautiful summer dress you want to wear, go ahead!
I hope these ideas can help you plan for your winter family photo sessions!
