Let’s talk about lighting. I try to schedule my outdoor sessions one hour before sunset, I like this time because the sun is low and less harsh. High noon will likely cast harsh shadows on faces, and I only offer mid-day sessions if we can shoot at a location that offers plenty of shaded area. What type of lighting do we usually get? Sunset and overcast.
Golden Hour
From spring to fall, I love to photograph families outdoors during golden hour. Golden hour is one hour before sunset, this gives the most flattering light. The sun is low and warm, creating dreamy images! When the sun comes out, we get these fantastic sessions. Be mindful when choosing a season for your family session. In winter months, our session will start early around 3pm, and in the summer months, the session start time can range from 7 to 8 pm! So if you’ve got an early bedtime, winter and early spring/late fall dates are your best bet!
Overcast
We are lucky that during summer months, we have relatively dry weather. Sometimes we do get cloudy sessions. Even during a sunny session, sometimes the clouds will roll in. Overcast can create beautiful moody images as well. If we are shooting mid-day, overcast weather is actually my preference. Noon sun is directly above, and casts shadows over our faces. So don’t fret if it’s cloudy on your session day, clouds are friends! I actually really love an overcast day with dramatic clouds! It gives so much more dimensions and interest to your family photos!
