When is the best age for family photos?

Are you thinking about getting family photos but unsure if your kids are ready for a photo session? I believe the best time to take family photo is…WHENEVER YOU CAN! There is no hard rule when is best, because every stage and every age is different and worthy of documenting.

Worried that your kids are too young or too old? I have photographed hundreds of children varying in ages, and I can give you a rough idea of what to expect from different stages.

Newborn + baby stage

Newborns are often sleepy, so expect some sleeping photos. Sometimes babies are awake too, so we will follow the baby’s lead! Lots of cuddling, holding baby, and feeding photos! Babies may get gassy or hungry, so there will be some downtime to comfort and sooth them.

Toddler stage

If you toddler isn’t walking yet, expect to hold them for most of the session. We will try to get some seated images as well. Toddlers this age may be very attached to one of the parent, so get ready to cuddle and snuggle for the majority of the session. If you toddler is active and very mobile, they’ll be curious about the new surrounding and we will likely be running after them! These make for fun and playful moments.

Preschool age 3-5

I would say this is one of my favourite stages because the children are more expressive and really enjoy playing around! Any little silly thing can make them laugh, and if they get grumpy, a little snack always cheers them up. We can play tag, have tickle fights, and get on top of dad’s shoulders!

School age

This is a fun stage, as many kids start to develop their own personalities. I love to capture their true personalities and moods. If your kid is shy, let’s capture it. If your kid is rambunctious, let’s see it! As kids get older, they may be a bit embarrassed about hugging and kissing, so we’ll hold hands, show off some dance moves together.

The best age for family photos is every age! Every stage is worthy of documenting. I want to encourage families to take photos whenever possible, because when kids get older, parents always regret not taking more photos.
